MAKOTA
Makota is an emerging singer-songwriter from Tanzania, East Africa. He was born in a small village in southern Tanzania in 1977. His family is from the Mwela tribe, and Makota is fluent in his traditional language Kimwela, as well as Swahili and English. An avid learner and creative spirit from a young age, after finishing school Makota moved to Bagamoyo, a town known throughout Tanzania for its vibrant arts community. It was here he developed skills in fine art (sculpture, painting and wood carving) and later in music. Having first picked up a guitar as a young boy, he continued to learn informally from his fellow artists and began to write his own songs. Makota writes songs about community, relationships and the environment around him. In 2009, Makota had his first recording experience recoring two traditional songs for a compilation album of eight local artists called, Kibagamoyo Wabagamoyo: Singer-Songwriters from Tanzania. He moved to Melbourne, Australia in 2012 and since then has been working on developing his music style and building a collection of songs.
