about

Multicultural Arts Victoria was proud to launch the 7th edition of their annual compilation album Visible, the product of the Visible Music Mentoring Program, featuring the sounds of a proudly multicultural Melbourne.

With over 200 different cultures converging in Victoria, Melbourne’s cultural landscape is shaped by its diversity and the food, music and way of life the city’s refugee and emerging communities bring with them to their new homelands.

MAV aims to encourage and nurture musicians from these communities through the Visible Music Mentoring program. The program links participants up with established producers and artists to create networks and generate promotional materials that provide a platform to further their career in the arts. Visible Seven is the culmination of the 2012 program.

Artists
The album features the vocals of Ethiopian pop star Bitsat Seyoum, who recreates the golden era of 1960s Ethiopian funk and soul.

She is joined by compatriots, Ethio-Jazz ensemble J-Azmaris who infuse a mix of original compositions with those of the great Ethiopian composers who have come before them.

Ras Jahknow represents Cape Verdean reggae grooves, while M.Wol brings us fresh and powerful Hip Hop rhymes in the South Sudanese language of Dinka.

The album is shaped by the producers and mentors who lend their talent and passion to the program, and in 2012 included Nicky Bomba, Jason Heerah (Electric Empire), Bob Knob (HopeSteet Studios), Ivan “Choi” Khatchoyan (Cookin’ on Three Burners, True Live & Candice Monique and the Optics), Wayne “Lotek” Bennett and Ptero_Stylus (Diafrix).

Presenting 15 tracks in total from South Sudan to Tibet, the album encompasses the essence of Melbourne’s unique musical demographic that represents sounds, styles and rhythms from all around the globe.
