Visible is an innovative music mentorship program that has given a kick start to many newly arrived musicians from refugee and emerging communities in Victoria. Established in 2005 by the state’s peak multicultural arts body, Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV), Visible has seen a wealth of new contemporary world music talent explode onto the music scene both locally and internationally over the past six years.
Many of the Visible artists have come to Australia to escape troubles in their homeland and have faced challenges establishing themselves in Australia despite successful music careers back home. The project has provided opportunities for these artists to develop and showcase their musical talents, whilst also offering you the audience, a glimpse of the vibrant and diverse music and culture they have brought with them to Australia.
In 2011 Visible has linked 50 emerging artists from diverse backgrounds, including African, Sri Lankan, Colombian and Pacific Islander, with some of Melbourne’s most versatile and talented producers, such as Jake Savona (Mista Savona), Jason Heerah (Electic Empire), Ivan ‘Choi’ Khatchoyan (Cookin’ on Three Burners, True Live), Nicky Bomba, Paul Coyle, Martinse Kanda and Michael Pollard. In many cases both mentor and mentee were learners, as the project offered an opportunity for both to enrich their musical knowledge, through the exchange of culturally specific musical styles, rhythms and sounds.
